Approval Guides by Type of Action

This section sets forth general guidance on new programs and modifications requirements. An overview of approvals required for the most common types of actions is available in the Approvals Process Matrix.

Concentrations, Minors, and Tracks

Focuses specifically on the addition, modification, or closure of a concentration, minor, or track to an established degree program.

Off-Campus Sites

Addresses requirements to establish, modify or close a location used for instructional purposes separate from UVA’s main (i.e., On-Grounds) campus.

Organizational Changes and All Other Actions

Includes guidance on organizational changes (e.g., establishing a new academic department), and other requests (e.g., dual academic award agreement with another university) that require reviews and approvals and are not described elsewhere on this website.

New Degree Programs

Provides information on internal and external requirements and approvals to establish an undergraduate, graduate or professional degree program.

Outlines requirements for changes to an undergraduate, graduate or professional degree program other than those related to a minor, track or concentration, such as a change in credit hours, delivery modality, or program name.
